The Cool Energy House Project in Windermere, Florida, showcases energy innovations generated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America program. The project will be shown in February in conjunction with the 2012 International Builders Show.

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) December 24, 2011

The Building America Retrofit Alliance (BARA), one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building America teams, today announced their participation in the Cool Energy House (CEH) project. The CEH demonstration project is located in Windermere, Fla., and will highlight the use of Building America vetted technical innovations to achieve peak energy performance, all in the context of a traditional remodeling project.

Working in close collaboration with the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings to design and engineer the CEH to achieve peak energy performance, BARA and their industry partners will demonstrate more than 10 proven, energy-efficiency upgrade measures that together will reduce the energy usage of a 1996-“spec-built” home by over 50%. The CEH’s key energy-saving measures include: air sealing and re-insulation; window, door, appliance, lighting and pool pump replacement; mechanical system replacement and air duct sealing; and cool roofing and novel building envelope additions. The home’s energy-focused makeover illustrates cost/performance trade-offs suggested by recently-developed building-energy optimization software (BEopt), created by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. With winter slowly approaching it may be a good time to check your plumbing to prevent your plumbing pipes from freezing when the temperature starts to go down.

When water freezes it will expand inside the pipes. When it expands enough it can cause the frozen pipes to burst resulting in serious damage to your home and plumbing. So it better to prevent frozen pipes with some DIY Plumbing then to have to call a plumber to fix them after they break.

The ice that forms inside the pipe does not normally cause the pipe to burst in that specific area where the blockage is occurring, but rather the pipe will break a little downstream between the blockage and a closed faucet in your kitchen or bathroom. When the water continues to freeze inside the pipes and the ice blockage expands, the water pressure in the sealed of section of the pipe between blockage and faucet will start to build up. When the water pressure gets to high this will lead to pipe failure.
